Whittling away in Buckinghamshire
Really Well Made have a few new products from our friend Geoffrey Fisher joining our product curation this month - just in time for Christmas presents! We thought we'd share a little bit about Geoffrey and the products he creates in his Buckinghamshire studio.
Buckinghamshire is county with a long history of woodworking and Geoffrey is continuing this tradition with quirky, tactile products that are both a pleasure to use and to look at.
Most of the timber used for his designs comes from coppiced woodland. Coppicing is an English term for utilising new shoots grown from the stump of a tree. Most trees will grow these shoots when they are cut down with the stump and roots remaining in the ground. The advantage is that a large number of smaller straighter branches are formed - perfect for creating some of the items that Geoffrey creates.
Timing is key with coppicing if you want to achieve a 'stripped' product; the bark must have enough sap left but not be so young that it sticks to the timber. This means that the window of time for creating these product is very small and we will have to wait another year before we can re-stock! We think this makes the products even more special. Soon to join our product range from Geoffrey are some oak skipping ropes, assorted timber slingshots and a boxed dog whistle. Keep checking back on his profile page here to view his range.
