Designed by Jean Prouvé in 1939, the Fauteuil de Salon ('Lounge Chair' in English) is a typical example of the distinctive structural aesthetic of his designs. The Fauteuil de Salon joins simple planes into a unified architectural object with a deep and extraordinarily comfortable seat surface and backrest. Rediscovered in the archives of the French engineer Jean Prouvé; the armchair has been updated in a period colour palette, which still feels remarkably contemporary today.
Constructed from polyurethane filling covered in fabric or leather with solid wood armrests and a steel base, the Fauteuil de Salon is a timeless furniture piece with an honest approach to form and construction. With its bold yet minimal design, the armchair provides maximum comfort and creates an inviting look. Thanks to the understated character the Fauteuil de Salon is extremely versatile and suited for use at home or in a public space and can stand either alone, in pairs or in groups.
The Fauteuil de Salon is available with three different armrest options, eight different base options and upholstery options in five different Vitra fabric groups - F60, F80, F100, L40 and L50. If you would like to order a lounge chair in a fabric/material combination not listed on the page, see the product download section on the product page or please feel free to contact us if you would like to see some fabric samples.
The Jean Prouvé Fauteuil series also includes a dining chair and an office chair with a swivel castor base.

This product is designed by
Jean Prouvé
Jean Prouvé completed his training as a metal artisan before opening his own workshop in Nancy in 1924. In the following years he created numerous furniture designs, and in 1947 Prouvé established his own factory.
He left his mark on architectural history again in 1971, when he played a major role in selecting the design of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers for the Centre Pompidou as chairman of the competition jury. Prouvé's work encompasses a wide range of objects, from a letter opener to door and window fittings, lighting and furniture, façade elements and prefabricated houses / modular building systems to large exhibition structures – essentially, almost anything that is suited to industrial production methods.
