Vitra now produces the Original Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with Vitra exclusive 'Nubia' fabrics. Nubia is a blended fabric with a very lively, natural appearance, Its fine substructure is interspersed with voluminous bouclé yarn, which gives the fabric depth and a soft, inviting touch. The varying combinations of yarns yield either contrasting or calm colour compositions with a distinctly Mediterranean flair.
Nubia Fabric provides unbeatable comfort with cushioned seat pads, a wood veneered plywood shell, and die-cast aluminium base. The five-pointed base enables a built-in swivel mechanism while the ottomans have a four-pointed fixed-position base. Both offered in polished or black-painted finishes. This comfortable classic is a 20th century masterpiece, renowned for its reclined position, pivot, cushioning, and form-fitting design. Loved by all ages, the Eames Lounge Chair offers luxurious comfort.
The iconic Eames Lounge Chair by Vitra was originally designed by husband and wife duo Charles and Ray Eames in 1956 as a birthday present for filmmaker Billy Wilder. Their inspiration came from one question ‘Why don’t we make an updated version of the old English club chair?’ With this comment, Charles Eames initiated the development of the Lounge Chair. The aim was to satisfy the desire for an amply proportioned chair that combined ultimate comfort with the highest quality materials and craftsmanship to provide the highest level of seating pleasure possible.
Since the lounge chair first went into production, the average person's height has increased worldwide by nearly 10cm. In close coordination with the Eames Office, Vitra developed the new larger version so that taller people, too, can enjoy the same exceptional comfort that Charles and Ray Eames intended with their original 1956 design. The pricing and dimensions on this product listing is for the 'new dimension' chair and ottoman.

Charles and Ray Eames

Charles was by highly influenced by the Finnish Architect Eliel Saarinen who encouraged Eames to move to Michigan to further study Architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He became friends with Eliel’s son Eero and together they created a prize-winning furniture entry for New York’s MOMA museum ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’ competition.
