The Eames LCW (Lounge Chair Wood) Chair by Vitra is a compact but supremely comfortable lounge chair. Its small proportions allow the chair to fit and provide high comfort in spaces where others could simply not work. The sloping seat invites the user to sink into the chair where the organic contoured shape is ready to support you in the most ergonomic way. A rubber connection between the back and the frame brings an unexpected flexibility and additional comfort to this distinctive chair.

From the iconic Plywood Group of chairs by Charles and Ray Eames, the Lounge Chair Wood (LCW) is crafted entirely from five layers of steam-pressed plywood, glued and heated using a specialist machine to bend the wood into the form of the chair. Thanks to the organic shape of the plywood shells and the slightly flexible backrests, their light and compact chairs offer great comfort.

Charles and Ray Eames spent many years experimenting with new techniques for producing three-dimensionally moulded plywood seat shells that conformed to the contours of the human body. They achieved this with the chairs in the Plywood Group, which have matured into classics with an honest appearance that still looks contemporary today. The Plywood group includes LCW, the LCW Calfskin and LCW Leather.

    Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray were a married couple who fundamentally changed the way furniture and buildings are designed and manufactured - playing a large role at the inception of the Modernist movement. They worked with Herman Miller and then later Vitra in the 1950’s to pioneer new technologies in moulded plywood, plastic resin and wire mesh products.

Charles was by highly influenced by the Finnish Architect Eliel Saarinen who encouraged Eames to move to Michigan to further study Architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He became friends with Eliel’s son Eero and together they created a prize-winning furniture entry for New York’s MOMA museum ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’ competition.
